To excel in table tennis, it’s essential to have the right training equipment at your disposal. While the basics include a table and bat, there are additional tools and accessories that can enhance your training sessions. In this post, we will explore some essential table tennis equipment which can aid in improving your skills, technique and overall performance.

Table & Net

Having a table and net is essential to practice table tennis, they provide the fundamental playing environment of the sport. While there are ways to practice off the table, most of your practice will be on the table. Without the use of a table you will find it very difficult to progress. The table and net provides a standardized playing condition for all players, they have a standard measurement that should be followed. This ensures fair play for everyone playing.

Robot & Net

A table tennis robot, although the can be expensive, is an invaluable training tool which allows you to practice your shots and improve alone. They can feed you balls with various spin and speed while also varying the placement of the ball. You can use them to either practice one shot to improve muscle memory or set it up to do an exercise. This allows you to improve your footwork as well as techniques. Some robots also have the option to feed randomly. This simulates real life game play, and can be very useful to practice against. Using a robot can help you improve your consistency and shot selection under pressure. If possible, I would recommend all players to use a robot to help improve your standard.

While using a robot it is also useful to have a net to catch all the balls at the end of the table. This eliminates the need to constantly pick up balls. This will save you valuable time allowing you to spend more focus and time on the table practicing. They can come in different designs such as, ones that attach to the net, or one on wheels which you can just place at the end of the table.

Balls and Lots of Them

You will find that balls go missing or get broken very fast. You may lose more than five balls each training session, so it is important you constantly have a high amount of balls at your disposal. It is also important that if you are to use a robot that you have a large supply of balls so you don’t need to keep stopping to refill it. Having an ample supply of table tennis balls is essential for effective practice. Having a large quantity of balls allows for continuous practice without interruption. It eliminates the need to constantly retrieve the ball after every shot. This will save a lot of time and allow you to keep a consistent rhythm and focus on your technique. Being able to continuously practice without the need of constant stopping to pick balls up will help build muscle memory.

You can also get ‘spin balls’. These are balls that are half white and half orange. It allows you to see the spin on the ball much easier, as you can see the ball rotating. It can help players understand the effect of spin and also help them see how much spin they are generating. They can also work the other way, where you can see how much spin your opponent has created. These balls are illegal in matches however, can be useful to use while training.

Spin Trainer

Using a spin trainer can be very useful for beginner to intermediate players. It helps to make sure you are using the correct technique in your shots. It emphasises the need to brush the ball to generate spin. They are flexible and can be moved into a suitable position so you can play the shot at the correct position. It helps players to get the correct timing and contact point on the bat. By changing the angle you can also practice generating spin for your serves. The faster the ball rotates the more spin you have generated.

Return Boards

The use of return boards are an effective way to improve technique. These specialised boards are designed to rebound the ball back to you when hit against them. By practicing against return boards, you can develop a better sense of timing, hand-eye coordination and stroke technique. They promote repetitive practice, helping to develop muscle memory and improve your technique. If you can incorporate the effective use of return boards into your training, it can significantly enhance your ability to receive and control the ball. This will lead to your performance improving.
To use return boards effectively, there are a few key considerations. If you set them up wrong you will be playing against unrealistic balls. Therefore, it is crucial to position it with the correct angle. This can take some trial and error. Start by placing it at a slight angle, facing towards you, to simulate realistic ball trajectories and rebounds. Adjust this as necessary. You must also make sure you are executing your shots correctly. Practice using different speed and spin, this will allow you to see what ball to expect back when playing matches. If you slow your shot down and play with more spin, the ball will come back slower and higher. However, return boards are set up for one shot, so you may find if you put lots of spin on it may miss the table. At this point you will need to angle to board lower so the ball hits the table. If you only want to practice one shot, to refine it, return boards can be very useful. However, if you are looking to include more variation in your practice, a robot may be a better suit for you.

Recording Equipment

Being able to record yourself and review your training sessions or matches is very important. You are able to slow the footage down and analyse everything about your technique, footwork and shot selection. You can use this to help identify areas for improvement. It allows you to objectively assess your strengths and weaknesses to develop strategies to improve. You will be able to observe your strokes in detail, this will help you spot any flaws in your technique. Such as, improper grip, body positioning, footwork and follow through. If you record your games, it allows you to have insight into your mental game. You can watch how you react in different situations. This can allow you to identify any emotional or mental barriers that may be hindering your performance. Recording yourself allows you to seek feedback from coaches or experienced players. They can analyse your recordings and provide valuable insights, pointing out the areas that need improvement. They could also suggest specific training exercises to help you improve on your weaknesses.

General Accessories

Other general equipment which could be useful for you to have:

  • Indoor shoes
  • Table tennis clothing
  • Towel
  • Bat cleaner
  • Glue
  • Bag and bat cases

Whether it’s buying your own table, a robot, spin trainer, return boards or recording equipment, these tools can help enhance your training sessions, improve your technique and boost your performance. 1. Wow, the simple art of table tennis has certainly come a long way over the years. I used to enjoy playing this game when I was younger but haven’t done it for quite a while. I love the idea of having a robot to serve you balls so that you can practice, but do you get a robot to pick up all the dropped balls afterward? Hopefully, most of them do land in the net and not all over the room. A return board would also be a great investment if you play on your own a lot.

    1. Having a robot is definitely a great way to practice and improve. The majority of the balls will land in the net however, for those that do not, most players will have a cheap fishing net to walk around the room to pick up a large quantity of balls quickly. The use of  return board can also be very useful when utilised correctly.
